Monongahela
$30.00
'Monongahela' is inspired by my hometown community of Morgantown, which lies along the Monongahela river that travels north towards Pittsburgh and the Ohio River. I actually semi-rarely saw the river growing up; almost everywhere we went in our daily life was on one side of the river or the view was blocked by foliage or buildings. This piece is imagined as a topographical snapshot of the Monongahela river in the late winter, when much of the snowfall isn't sticking, but the landscape is yet to come to life. In the small bottom panel is represented a small fauna scene, that I layered to bubble out with a second background patterned layer
I stretched the textural plastic around the back of the mattboard, and used hot glue to secure the cardboard framing. The cardboard I used came from a Cracker Barrel catering box! When I saw it, I knew I had to keep it and it would be perfect to create a faux frame. There is string hot glued on the back and I'd consider this work 100% ready to hang. With the resemblance to traditional painting/2-D art, I wanted to play with those traditions by making my plastic work very textural and pop out of the frame. I fused it as minimally as possible to secure the plastic.
